Penrith

Red sandstone buildings line the market square where farmers still bring sheep down from the fells on weekday mornings. Penrith sits at the gateway to the Lakes, a proper working town that hasn't lost its soul to tourism. The castle ruins overlook the Eden Valley, while the old railway station houses cafes that know how to make a decent bacon butty.

Helvellyn looms to the south-west, pulling serious hikers towards its summit ridges. The eastern fells offer less crowded walking - Hart Side and Raise provide cracking views without the Helvellyn hordes. For something different, the Greenside Lead Mine tells the story of Victorian industry carved into the mountainside. The Lake District Ski Club operates nearby, proving the fells have more tricks than most visitors realise.

From the town centre, you're twenty minutes from Ullswater's shore and half an hour from Keswick's theatre crowds. The M6 junction makes Penrith dead easy to reach, while the West Coast railway line connects directly to London and Scotland. Local buses run regularly to Windermere and the central Lakes.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to nip into town for proper shops and pubs, yet surrounded by fell country that stretches to Scotland. The eastern Lakes feel wilder here - fewer tour buses, more working farms, and walks that reward with solitude rather than Instagram likes.
