The walk up Randerside from Penrith isn't a household name, which is rather the point. It's a proper fell rather than a mountain, but the views across to the high peaks justify the slog, and you won't be queuing at the summit like you would on Helvellyn.

You're looking at a straightforward fell walk that takes most people two to three hours round trip. The paths are well-trodden but nothing you can't manage in decent boots, and the terrain opens up nicely once you gain height. On a clear day the Lakeland skyline spreads out behind you - Blencathra, Skiddaw, the works - while the other direction gives you the Pennines rolling away towards the horizon. It's not dramatic, but it's proper walking country.

Walkers and fell runners will get the most from this one. Families with younger kids might find it a bit relentless, though teenagers keen to bag peaks would be fine. The bonus is you can do this as a base from any of the caravan parks nearby - Threlkeld Hall or Ewe Love Camping Pods put you within spitting distance, and it's only a short drive from the busier spots like Castlerigg Hall or Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club.

Start early if you're going in summer. The fell catches cloud quickly, especially in the afternoon, and you want the views. Wear proper kit - it's exposed up there. Free to access, naturally, since it's open fell. Worth the walk? Absolutely, especially if you're already staying in the area and want something without the crowds.
