About Greenside Lead Mine

The old workings at Greenside are scattered across the fellside above Penrith like the bones of some Victorian-era industry - shafts, levels, spoil heaps, and a handful of sturdy stone buildings that have weathered 200-odd years of Lake District weather. This was a proper lead mine in its day, operational from the 1820s through to the 1960s, and you can still pick out the infrastructure that kept it running: the deep cuts where miners descended, the channels for washing ore, the ruins of processing works.

It's not a polished visitor attraction with tea rooms or interpretive signs, which is both its charm and its limitation. You're essentially wandering a genuine industrial site, reading the landscape itself rather than being led by the hand. History walkers and industrial archaeology enthusiasts will find plenty to examine, tracing the routes miners took and imagining the scale of the operation. Kids might get bored quite quickly unless they're the sort who like clambering over old stonework and peering into dark entrances - in which case they'll be in heaven.

Allow an hour or so, more if you're taking photos or making detailed notes. There's no facilities on site, so bring water. It's free to access, though the terrain is rough and boggy in places, so proper fell boots are essential.

Staying at one of the nearby parks - Castlerigg Hall is the closest at under six miles - puts you well for exploring Penrith as a base. The site itself feels remote enough to feel genuinely away from things, yet it's only a short drive from town.
