Souther Fell

Southern Fell rises abruptly from the Vale of Keswick like a giant's shoulder, and once you're on it, you understand why walkers have been tramping up here for centuries. The ascent from Threlkeld village (east side being the most accessible route) is straightforward rather than punishing - roughly 600 metres of climbing, nothing that'll have you gasping for mercy if you're moderately fit. The fell itself is broad and open, moorland grass and rocky outcrops, with views that stretch across the Lake District fells and down towards Penrith. On a clear day you'll pick out Helvellyn and Skiddaw without effort.

This is walker territory, primarily. You won't find a café at the top or a visitor centre halfway. It's just you, the wind, and genuinely impressive sightlines across Cumbria. The round trip takes about two hours from the valley, so it's ideal if you want to bag a fell without dedicating your entire day. Summer's your best bet weatherwise, though spring can be lovely too when the light's sharp.

Staying nearby at one of the caravan parks - Threlkeld Hall is basically on your doorstep at 2.7 miles, or Ewe Love Camping Pods even closer at 2.3 - puts you in perfect position for this and other Lake District walks. It's the sort of walk you do before breakfast, then spend the afternoon exploring Castlerigg Stone Circle or one of the bigger fells. Not Instagram-famous, not crowded. Just proper fell walking.
