High Brow

The walk up High Brow from Penrith is straightforward enough, but don't let the modest height fool you. At just over 600 metres, this fell delivers views across the Lake District that punch well above its weight. On a clear day you're looking at Ullswater stretched out below and the peaks beyond - proper rewarding after a decent climb.

It's a fell walk, not a casual stroll. The path from the valley floor is relentless, steep in places, and takes around ninety minutes to reach the top depending on your pace. The payoff is worth it though. The summit itself is windswept and exposed - bring a decent jacket even when it looks calm down below. Walkers and serious hikers will get the most from this one. Families with younger children might find it a slog; the terrain's rough and there's not much to do once you're up there except enjoy the views and turn around.

Free to visit, obviously - it's a fell. The best light tends to be late afternoon when the sun hits the valley properly. If you're staying at one of the caravan parks dotted around the area - Troutbeck Head and Ewe Love Camping Pods are closest, just a couple of miles away - you could do this as half a day's outing. Pair it with a walk around Ullswater afterwards if you're still feeling keen, or head into Penrith for food and recovery. Allow at least three hours round trip if you want to take your time and actually look at the view.
