Keswick

Surrounded by some of the Lake District's most formidable fells, this market town sits perfectly positioned between Derwentwater's shimmering waters and the dramatic peaks that have drawn walkers for generations. The town centre hums with outdoor gear shops and fell-walking chat, while the surrounding countryside offers everything from gentle rambles to serious mountain challenges.

Castlerigg Stone Circle, just a short drive east, remains one of the Lake District's most atmospheric ancient sites - those 5,000-year-old stones frame views of Helvellyn and Skiddaw that'll have you reaching for your camera. For something more demanding, Lonscale Pike and the neighbouring Lonscale Fell provide cracking routes with proper mountain views, though the scramble up Sharp Edge nearby isn't for the faint-hearted.

Derwentwater steals the show for many visitors. The lake's gentle shores are perfect for an afternoon stroll, while boat trips run regularly during the warmer months. Meanwhile, Thirlmere Embankment offers a quieter alternative - this Victorian reservoir surrounded by forest feels more remote despite being easily accessible.

Getting here is straightforward enough. The A66 connects Keswick to the M6, though weekend traffic can be properly grim in summer. Penrith, about 17 miles northeast, has the nearest major rail connections.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense for exploring this corner of Cumberland. You're within walking distance of Derwentwater's shores, yet close enough to tackle the higher fells when the weather's right. Castlerigg Hall and several other sites put you right in the heart of fell-walking country, with Keswick's pubs and restaurants just a short drive when you've earned that post-hike pint.
