Market day brings this Cumberland town properly to life, with traders setting up stalls around the ancient market square that's been the heart of Wigton for centuries. The rest of the week it settles into a quieter rhythm, locals popping into the traditional shops that still line King Street and West Street.

St Cuthbert's Church dominates the skyline with its impressive tower, while the surrounding countryside rolls away in gentle fells and farmland. It's proper border country here - you can feel Scotland's pull just to the north. The Solway coast lies tantalizingly close, with Mawbray Banks Nature Reserve offering excellent birdwatching and those curious Coastal Tower 16b ruins at Mawbray Sandpit adding a bit of historical intrigue to coastal walks.
