Mawbray Nature Reserve

The salt marshes at Mawbray stretch out flat and golden, giving you proper views across the Solway Firth towards Scotland. It's a nature reserve that rewards patience - you won't find much in the way of facilities or visitor infrastructure, but that's rather the point. Come for the birdwatching, particularly in autumn and winter when migratory species pile in. The walks are straightforward and the air tastes of salt.

This is walker territory first and foremost. Bring binoculars and a decent bird guide, or go with someone who actually knows their waders from their wildfowl. Families with young kids might find an hour enough - the landscape is expansive but not exactly packed with things to do beyond observation. You're looking at a couple of hours maximum if you're doing a serious ramble, depending on tide times.

Location-wise, it's a short drive from Wigton, which means it slots nicely into a Cumbrian coastal break. North Lakes Country Park sits just 2 miles away and offers proper facilities if you're staying put for a few days - that combination of nature reserve and holiday park base works well. Stanwix Park is another option at 4 miles, closer if you want creature comforts alongside your coastal exploring. The marshes themselves are free to access, though you'll need an OS map or decent local knowledge to navigate properly. Go when the light's low - early morning or late afternoon - and the whole place looks absolutely different.
