Sale How is a modest fell above Keswick that punches well above its weight for effort expended. The walk is straightforward - you're looking at roughly two hours for the round trip from the town, gaining maybe 300 metres or so. What you get in return is proper Lake District views without the crowds that pile onto Catbells or Skiddaw.

The summit itself is bare fell, nothing fancy. No trig point, no cairn of note. But that's rather the point - you're not here for Instagram moments; you're here because the walk itself is sound and the vistas across Derwentwater to the higher peaks are genuinely lovely. On a clear day, you can pick out the Helvellyn range without strain. On a murky one, well, you'll still feel like you've earned something.

Families with reasonably fit children will get on fine here - it's not technical, and the descent is manageable even for wobbly knees. Older walkers tend to appreciate it too, given you're not committing to a full day expedition. History buffs won't find much to write home about, but if you're camping at Castlerigg Hall or one of the other sites clustered around Keswick, it's a cracking option for an afternoon that doesn't require a dawn start or a packed lunch the size of a rucksack.

Go when the weather's settled and you've got decent light. The fell can feel properly remote despite being practically on Keswick's doorstep.
