Lonscale Pike

The walk up Lonscale Pike from Keswick is one of those Lakeland climbs that sneaks up on you - modest height, proper steep in places, and absolutely worth the effort. Starting near Threlkeld, you'll gain about 300 metres over less than two miles, which sounds gentle until you hit the initial push through heather and bracken. The summit itself is a rocky little crown with views that punch well above its weight. On a clear day you get Helvellyn, Skiddaw, and the whole northern lakes spread out like someone's laid them on for you specifically.

This is a walker's peak rather than a tourist trap. The path is well-trodden but never crowded, and you won't find a café or souvenir shop waiting at the top - just stone, sky, and proper silence. Most people tackle it in under two hours return, so it works brilliantly if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Threlkeld Hall or Castlerigg Hall are both within three miles - and want something achievable before breakfast or after lunch. Families with kids aged eight-plus will manage it fine, though the rocky summit demands a bit of care.

Go early morning if you can. The afternoon cloud rolls in fast around Helvellyn and the views vanish. Wear proper boots, not trainers - the ground gets boggy and the scramble to the summit needs grip. It's free, obviously. Allow three hours if you're not rushing, and you'll come off that hill wondering why it isn't more famous.
