Pond Hill

The walk up Pond Hill from Clitheroe is a proper little workout, but you're rewarded with views across the Ribble Valley that justify the climb. It's not one of Lancashire's dramatic peaks - the fell itself is modest, more rolling than rocky - but what makes it worth doing is the vantage point. On a clear day you can see right across to Pendle Hill and the moorland beyond.

It takes about 45 minutes to an hour from the town, depending on your pace and how much you stop to catch your breath on the steeper sections. The route is well-trodden and straightforward enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find it a bit of a slog. Walkers will get the most from this one - it's the sort of outing that works brilliantly as a morning's exertion before heading back to your accommodation for lunch.

Being so close to Clitheroe makes Pond Hill an obvious add-on if you're staying at Parkdean Resorts Todber Valley or Holgates Ribble Valley, both within a couple of miles. It pairs nicely with exploring the town itself, which has its own appeal. The hill is completely free and open to the public - just turn up and walk. There's no visitor centre or facilities at the top, so bring water and wear decent boots. Winter can make the descent slippery, so save this one for drier months.
