The earthwork near Clitheroe is one of those places that makes you stop and think about who walked here centuries ago. It's not dramatic - no towering ramparts or intact fortifications - but that's rather the point. What you're looking at are the subtle remains of ancient defences, worn smooth by time and weather, the kind of thing you'd walk past without knowing unless someone pointed it out.

This is proper territory for archaeology enthusiasts and anyone with a genuine interest in how people organised themselves in pre-Roman or Romano-British Lancashire. Casual visitors might find it underwhelming if they're expecting something visually striking; there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, just the landscape itself telling the story. You can walk the perimeter in under an hour, though keen types will want longer to sit with it, to imagine what stood here.

Clitheroe itself is the jumping-off point, a small market town with decent facilities. The site works best as part of a broader ramble through Ribble Valley rather than a standalone destination. You're well positioned for Parkdean Resorts Todber Valley or Holgates Ribble Valley if you're camping or caravanning - both within easy reach - and the surrounding countryside offers far more dramatic stuff: Clitheroe Castle, the river walks, the fell country beyond.

Free access, no formal opening hours that I'm aware of. Go on a clear day when the light's good and you can actually see the earthwork's profile. Worthwhile if you're staying locally and fancy something quieter than the obvious attractions.
