Clitheroe

The Ribble Valley's most handsome market town sits beneath a brooding medieval castle, its narrow streets lined with proper stone cottages and independent shops that haven't been swallowed by chains. Clitheroe Castle dominates the skyline - what's left of it anyway - perched on a limestone outcrop that's been fortified for nearly a thousand years.

Walkers have it made here. The Forest of Bowland rolls away to the north and east, all open moorland and ancient hills with names like Bomber Hill and Tootles Hill. These aren't your dramatic Lake District peaks, but they're proper Lancashire countryside - windswept, often soggy, and brilliant for getting away from it all.

Thursday's market day brings the town alive. Local farmers hawk their wares in the cobbled square, while the surrounding streets offer everything from antique shops to decent cafes. The Holmes Mill complex has transformed an old textile factory into something rather special - shops, restaurants, and even a food hall that's worth the journey alone.

Getting here's straightforward enough. The A59 runs right through town, connecting Clitheroe to Preston in the south and Skipton to the east. The railway station sees regular services to Manchester and Blackpool, making it surprisingly well-connected for somewhere that feels genuinely rural.

Basing yourself at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to nip into town for supplies or a pub lunch, but far enough out to properly appreciate the Pennine foothills. The surrounding countryside is littered with ancient earthworks and archaeological sites - evidence that people have found this corner of Lancashire worth settling in for millennia.
