Higher Wheathead

Scrambling up this modest Lancashire fell above Clitheroe rewards you with proper Ribble Valley views that stretch for miles. Higher Wheathead isn't exactly Scafell Pike - at just over 300 metres, it's more of a sturdy hill than a mountain - but the panoramic sweep across the Forest of Bowland makes it well worth the effort.

Walkers with decent fitness will find the ascent straightforward enough, though it's steep in places and can get muddy after rain. The path isn't always obvious, so bring an OS map if you're not familiar with the area. From the top, you'll spot Pendle Hill looming to the east and, on clear days, glimpses of the Lake District fells far to the north.

Families staying at nearby Todber Valley Holiday Park or Holgates Ribble Valley will find this a manageable day out, though younger children might struggle with the rougher terrain near the summit. Allow two to three hours for the round trip, including time to appreciate the views and catch your breath. The walk starts from minor roads south of Clitheroe, so you'll need to drive rather than walk from town. Best tackled in decent weather when the visibility is good - there's little point slogging up here in thick mist.
