The Walk

Five miles southwest of Stoke-on-Trent, this 1,506-foot peak offers proper hill walking without the Pennine slog. The Walk - an oddly matter-of-fact name for what's actually one of Staffordshire's highest points - delivers sweeping views across the county's rolling farmland and towards the Peak District proper.

Families with older children will find the climb manageable, though the steep sections near the top will test anyone carrying a toddler. Serious walkers can link it with other nearby summits for a decent day out, while casual visitors might find the hour's climb a bit much for the view alone. The summit itself is fairly unremarkable - no dramatic crags or ancient monuments, just grassland and a triangulation point.

Timing matters here. Clear days reveal the Roaches and Kinder Scout in the distance, but Staffordshire's changeable weather can turn the vista into grey soup within minutes. Early morning or late afternoon light transforms the surrounding countryside into something rather special.

Staying at Rue Hill Campsite or The Star Camping and Caravanning Club Site puts you within easy reach, making this a solid addition to a Peak District fringe holiday. Common End Farm Campsite is another decent base if you're planning several walks in the area. Not spectacular, but well worth the effort on a good day.
