The earthwork itself is barely dramatic at first glance - a low bank of earth and a ditch cutting through the Lancashire landscape near Clitheroe, the sort of thing you might walk past without thinking. But that's precisely what makes it interesting. This ancient enclosure, whose exact purpose remains unclear, dates back somewhere into the Iron Age or earlier, and standing within its boundaries you're genuinely confronted with mystery. Was it defensive? Ceremonial? A cattle pound that's survived millennia by accident? Nobody really knows.

Walkers get the most from this site. It's not the kind of place to spend hours at - thirty minutes, maybe forty-five if you're genuinely curious - but it rewards the small effort of finding it and following the earthwork around. The setting matters too. This isn't some isolated ruin; it's part of the Ribble Valley landscape, with decent views across farmland. On a clear day it's rather pleasant.

You'll want sturdy boots. The ditch holds water, the grass can be long, and there's nothing resembling visitor facilities - no café, no car park, no interpretation boards. It's just you and whatever happened here a thousand or more years ago. Free to visit, naturally, given there's nowhere to pay.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Parkdean Resorts Todber Valley or Holgates Ribble Valley are both within a mile or so - it's worth combining this with a walk into Clitheroe itself. The enclosure works as a proper detour rather than a destination. History types will appreciate it more than casual visitors.
