West Field Hill

The walk up West Field Hill rewards you with proper views across the Ribble Valley - nothing too demanding, but it's a genuine climb that sorts the huffers from the puffers. From Clitheroe, it takes barely twenty minutes to get here, and the summit gives you the kind of panorama that makes the short slog worthwhile. On a clear day you can see right across Lancashire's moorland; on a grey one, at least you've got the valley floor mapped out beneath you.

It's a walker's spot rather than a family afternoon out, unless your kids are the type who'll genuinely enjoy trudging uphill for a view. The path itself is straightforward enough - no scrambling, no technical bits - but it's steep enough that you'll notice your legs. Most people spend thirty to forty minutes up here, though you could easily double that if you're the lingering type with a flask and a sandwich.

Fitting it into a holiday based at one of the local parks - Parkdean's Todber Valley or Holgates Ribble Valley are both within spitting distance - makes sense as a morning activity before heading into Clitheroe itself for lunch. It's free, naturally, and accessible year-round, though winter can make the top muddy and windswept. Worth the detour if you're already in the valley, but don't go expecting anything beyond a decent hill walk with a decent view at the end.
