Tootles Hill

The walk up Tootles Hill from Clitheroe takes about forty minutes if you're reasonably fit, and the effort pays off with proper views across the Ribble Valley. It's a genuine fell rather than a fell-side stroll - the gradient catches you out if you're expecting something gentle, especially in the final push to the summit.

What you get at the top is the kind of 360-degree panorama that makes you understand why people bothered walking at all. On a clear day you can see across to Pendle Hill and down the valley towards the town itself. The limestone countryside rolls away in all directions, which matters if you're interested in landscape rather than a quick tick-off the list.

This works best for active walkers and fell runners rather than families with young children - the path gets rough underfoot and there's real exposure in places. It's free, obviously, and you can do it any time. Early morning gets you away from the midweek tourist crowd, and the light's better for photographs.

If you're staying at Parkdean Resorts Todber Valley or Holgates Ribble Valley - both within striking distance - this makes a proper morning activity before lunch in Clitheroe. Thornton Hall Country Park nearby gives you other options for less strenuous days. The walk itself takes two to three hours there and back depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. Worth the detour if you've got legs and don't mind a bit of scrambling.
