Carnforth

Steam trains still whistle through this old railway junction, where Brief Encounter was filmed at the station back in 1945. Carnforth sits snugly between the Cumbrian fells and Morecambe Bay's vast sands, making it a proper gateway to both Lake District adventures and coastal walks.

Warton Crag dominates the eastern skyline - a limestone outcrop that's well worth the climb for sweeping views across the bay. The Rocking Stones up there are a geological oddity, massive boulders balanced precariously after the last ice age. Below ground, the area's riddled with caves like Dog Holes and Echo Pit, though most need proper caving experience.

Morecambe's golden mile lies just four miles west, while the southern Lake District beckons from the north. You're spoilt for choice really. Scalestones Point offers cracking bay views without the Blackpool crowds, and the Torrisholme Bowl Barrow reminds you this coast's been attracting visitors for millennia.

The town itself keeps things low-key - a few good pubs, decent shops, but nothing flashy. That's rather the point. From here you can reach Kendal in twenty minutes, Lancaster in ten, yet still wake up to curlews calling across the mosses.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. Whether you fancy the luxury of Hidden Hills Luxury Glamping or something more traditional at Fell End Holiday Park, you're ideally placed for fell walking, bay exploring, and the odd trip to Morecambe for proper fish and chips. The train station connects you to the wider world, but honestly, why would you want to leave?
