Dog Holes

You'll find Dog Holes tucked into the limestone cliffs near Carnforth, a proper little cave system that punches above its weight for a Cumbrian coastal walk. It's not a vast underground chamber - more of a dramatic natural archway carved into the rock face where the River Lune meets the fell. The caves themselves are accessible at low tide, which is the key detail here. You can walk right into them, clamber around on the stone, and get a real sense of how water shapes rock over millennia.

Walkers absolutely love it. The approach from Carnforth isn't strenuous, and you get genuine coastal scenery without needing to trek for hours. Families with kids who don't mind a bit of scrambling will find it engaging for an hour or so - there's something about exploring caves that captures their attention. History types will appreciate that these formations have been around for thousands of years, though don't expect plaques or interpretive boards.

Timing matters. Hit it at low tide or you'll be disappointed. There's no official visitor centre or admission fee that we can find - it's a free attraction, which is brilliant. Allow a couple of hours including the walk to and from the nearest car parks, though you could comfortably fit it into a half-day itinerary.
