Warton Crag

The limestone escarpment rises sharply from the Lancaster Canal towpath, commanding attention the moment you round the bend near Carnforth. Warton Crag isn't high - about 200 metres - but what it lacks in altitude it makes up for in character. The walk up takes roughly 45 minutes from the canal, following a fairly steep path that'll have you breathing hard, though the ascent itself is straightforward enough.

Once you're on top, the views across Morecambe Bay and down to the flats below are genuinely worth the effort. On a clear day you can pick out the Lake District fells beyond, which lends the place a proper sense of occasion. The crag itself is popular with rock climbers, so you might find people working routes on the face - worth watching for a moment if you get the chance.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's a solid morning or early afternoon outing, especially if you combine it with a stroll along the canal towpath either side. Kids aged ten and up will manage the climb without too much complaint, though younger ones might find the steep section tedious. The ground can be boggy in places, so decent boots are worth packing.
