Hunting Hill

The walk up Hunting Hill rewards you with proper views across Morecambe Bay - on a clear day you can see right across to the Lake District fells. It's a modest peak by Cumbrian standards, nothing that'll exhaust you, but it's steep enough in places to feel like actual work.

You're looking at a couple of hours there and back from Carnforth, which makes it ideal if you're staying at one of the holiday parks dotted around - Bay View or Wonderland Retreats are both within spitting distance. The fell itself sits in decent walking country, so you can easily tack on other routes if you're after a longer day out.

Historically it's got the sort of name that speaks to the moorland character of the place - somewhere people would have hunted game centuries back. These days it's walkers who come looking for something. The ascent winds through rough moorland, and while it's not technically difficult, the ground can be boggy after rain, so decent boots matter.

Families with older kids will manage it fine. Younger ones might find it a slog without proper incentive - the summit isn't dramatic enough to feel like an achievement to a reluctant seven-year-old, if I'm honest. Solo walkers and keen fell-baggers will get more from it, especially if they're using it as part of a broader explore of the area around Carnforth.

It's the sort of walk that makes sense as part of a longer holiday, not as a destination in itself. Worth the detour if you're in the region, but don't expect to spend hours up there.
