Llangammarch Wells

The Heart of Wales railway line cuts right through this quiet spa town, making it one of the most accessible spots in mid-Powys. Llangammarch Wells built its reputation on natural springs and Victorian health tourism, though today it feels more like a peaceful staging post than a bustling resort. The Riverside Gardens offer lovely walks along the Irfon, particularly beautiful when the autumn leaves are turning.

St James Church anchors the town centre, its stone tower visible from the surrounding hills. Just down the line, Llanwrtyd station serves the neighbouring town where you'll find the Heritage & Arts Centre - worth a visit for local history buffs. The Red kite sculpture there celebrates one of Wales' greatest conservation successes.

This is proper walking country. The Cambrian Mountains roll away in all directions, crossed by ancient drovers' routes and modern footpaths. Dolwen Fields nature reserve provides easier terrain for families, while more ambitious hikers can tackle the peaks that separate Powys from Carmarthenshire.

Getting here couldn't be simpler - the Heart of Wales line connects directly to Shrewsbury and Swansea, making this one of the few genuinely car-free destinations in rural Wales. Builth Wells, about 15 minutes by car, offers more shops and services if needed.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You're within striking distance of the Brecon Beacons to the south, while the quiet lanes around Llanwrtyd and beyond offer cycling routes that rarely see traffic. The railway means day trips to either coast are entirely feasible, though you might find the rolling countryside keeps you closer to home.
