Crickhowell

Market town atmosphere meets serious mountain country in this corner of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Crickhowell feels properly Welsh despite its English postcode - a quirk of administrative boundaries that locals find mildly amusing.

The town sits in the Usk Valley with the dramatic bulk of Pen y Fan visible to the southwest. Table Mountain looms directly overhead, its distinctive flat-topped profile earning the nickname. Walking boots are essential kit here. The surrounding peaks include Y Grib and Castell Dinas, both offering cracking views across the valley once you've made the climb.

Crickhowell's high street runs a decent selection of independent shops and cafes. The bridge over the River Usk has thirteen arches on one side but only twelve on the other - a local talking point that's kept visitors puzzled for centuries.

History buffs should seek out Pen-y-gaer Roman Camp, tucked away in the hills above town. Less well-known than other Roman sites in Wales, but the earthworks are still clearly visible if you know where to look.

From nearby camping spots like Pencelli Castle Caravan & Camping Park or Cwmdu Campsite, you're perfectly positioned for exploring both the town and the surrounding Beacons. Abergavenny lies just ten miles east for bigger shops and transport links, while the real draws are the walking routes that fan out in every direction.

Llangynidr Moors Viewpoint provides the classic panoramic shot if the weather's playing ball. On clear days you can see across three counties from up there.
