Blaen y Henbant

The walk up Blaen y Henbant rewards you with one of those views that makes the climb worthwhile. It's a proper peak - nothing too daunting, which is exactly why families and casual walkers keep coming back. From the summit, you get sweeping vistas across the Black Mountains, and on a clear day, the Brecon Beacons rise up in the distance like they're putting on a show just for you.

The route itself is straightforward enough. You'll find yourself on moorland paths with decent underfoot conditions most of the year, though winter can turn it boggy. Allow two to three hours for a round trip from nearby Crickhowell, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. There's something about standing up here that just stops you rushing - the wind, the space, the light changing across the valleys.

This works brilliantly as part of a longer Black Mountains walking circuit, or if you're basing yourself at somewhere like Cwmdu Campsite, it's an ideal morning jaunt before breakfast. Grove Farm Glamping is also within striking distance if you fancy a bit more comfort. The peak pulls in history buffs too - the landscape itself tells stories of centuries of farming and settlement below.

It's free to visit, naturally, and there are no opening hours to worry about. Just turn up with decent boots and weather-appropriate layers. The exposure up here can catch you out if you're not prepared.
