Y Grib

The walk up Y Grib takes about forty minutes from Crickhowell if you're fit and don't mind a proper slog. It's a 482-metre peak in the Black Mountains, which sounds grander than it plays out - there's nothing dramatic about it, just steady climbing through decent Welsh countryside. What you get for your effort is a wide, open summit with views across the Vale of Usk and towards the Brecon Beacons on a clear day. On a clear day. Younger kids might find the gradient tedious without the payoff of a dramatic viewpoint. Free to visit, naturally - it's a hillside. Most folks allow two to three hours for the round trip depending on fitness and how long you faff about at the top. The Crickhowell area is cracking for walking holidays, and you'll find yourself near several good campsites - Cwmdu is the closest at five miles, or push slightly further to Olchon Valley or Chapel House Farm if those suit you better. It's the sort of walk you do as part of a wider exploring day rather than a destination in itself, but if the weather cooperates, worth the leg work.
