Mynydd Troed

The walk up Mynydd Troed rewards you with proper views across the Black Mountains and down the Usk Valley - on a clear day you'll see for miles. It's not a massively challenging climb from Crickhowell, but it's steep enough that you'll know you've done it once you're at the top. The summit itself is a bit bare and windswept, which is half the appeal; there's nothing between you and the landscape.

History types will appreciate that you're walking through an area thick with old tracks and stories - this was droving country once, and the hills around here have Bronze Age barrows scattered about if you know where to look. The route from town is straightforward enough, though the paths can get muddy after rain.

Families with older kids will manage it fine, but younger ones might find the climb tedious. An hour up, forty minutes down if you're reasonably fit. Go in the morning when the light's best and crowds are thinnest.

If you're based at Cwmdu Campsite - which is only 3.8 miles away and genuinely well-reviewed - you've got this as a perfect half-day excursion. Pair it with a pint in Crickhowell afterwards. The nearby caravan parks at Bryndu and Pencelli Castle are equally well-placed if you want to make a proper few days of exploring the Black Mountains. It's proper hill-walking territory without needing technical gear or a guide.
