Victorian spa architecture still defines the streets here, though the grand days of taking the waters feel wonderfully remote. Llandrindod Wells sits in the heart of Mid Wales like a time capsule, all ornate ironwork and faded elegance that somehow makes it more appealing than any polished tourist town.

The real draw isn't the town itself but what surrounds it. Hill walkers have proper choices - Aberedw Hill offers cracking views across the Wye Valley, while Llandegley Rocks provides a decent scramble for those wanting something more challenging. Carneddau and Red Hill make for lovely afternoon walks, especially if you fancy working up an appetite before dinner.

Water features heavily in the landscape. Pwl Brwynog and Mawn Pool are both worth seeking out, particularly if you're into wildlife watching or just want a quiet spot away from the crowds. The Protected Species nature reserve does exactly what it says on the tin, though don't expect flashy visitor centres or gift shops.

Getting here means driving - the A483 runs right through town, connecting you to Builth Wells (about 8 miles south) or onward to Newtown. It's proper rural Wales once you leave the main road, all rolling hills and sheep-dotted fields.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. Places like Disserth Caravan & Camping Park or Irfon River Caravan & Camping Park put you right in the countryside while keeping Llandrindod Wells close enough for supplies or a pub meal. The hills beckon from your doorstep, and you'll appreciate having a base after a day tramping around Rhulen Hill or exploring the quieter corners around Cefn Wylfre.
