Pwl Brwynog sits quietly in the Powys hills, a modest lake that won't blow your mind but does the job if you're after a bit of water and air. It's roughly a 20-minute drive from Llandrindod Wells, so worth factoring in if you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks like Fforest Fields or Great House Farm.

The lake itself is small - you can walk round it in under an hour, which makes it decent for families with young kids who need moving on fairly quickly. The surrounding countryside is proper Welsh moorland: rolling, open, not particularly dramatic but genuinely peaceful. There's decent birdwatching potential if that's your thing, and the light changes beautifully across the water depending on the time of day.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though facilities are minimal. No cafe, no visitor centre, no car park to speak of. Bring a packed lunch if you're making an afternoon of it. The ground can get boggy after rain, so decent boots are essential rather than optional.

It's the sort of place that works best as part of a wider walk round the area rather than a standalone destination. Combine it with exploration of the surrounding moorland and you've got a proper morning out. Solo walkers and birdwatchers will appreciate the quietness. Families might find it a bit limited on its own - it's more of an add-on than a main event.
