Llan-fraith Hill

The walk up Llan-fraith Hill rewards you with proper views across the Powys moorland - the kind of vista that makes the climb worthwhile even on a grey Welsh afternoon. It's a straightforward hill rather than a technical scramble, which means families with decent legs can manage it without too much fuss, though younger children might find the ascent a slog. Allow a couple of hours return from the base if you're not rushing, longer if the light's good and you fancy lingering at the top.

This isn't a destination that'll take your breath away in the way Pen y Ghent does, but it's the sort of walk that reminds you why people come to Mid Wales in the first place - space, quiet, and the kind of air that actually fills your lungs. Walkers using Llandrindod Wells as their base will find it accessible enough for a morning or afternoon outing without needing to drive far. The town itself sits just a couple of miles away, so you could combine it with a poke around the Victorian spa resort.

If you're camping at Fforest Fields or any of the other pods and sites dotted around the area - Great House Farm's only 3.8 miles out, Celtic Woodland's 5 miles or so - this makes an easy leg-stretcher between breakfast and settling in. Weather permitting, the moorland opens out properly from the top, with views that stretch toward the Brecon Beacons on a clear day. Wear decent boots; the ground gets boggy in places.
