Pennau

The walk up Pennau isn't dramatic, but it's proper rewarding. This Powys peak sits just outside Llangammarch Wells, and once you've hauled yourself to the top, you get views across the Irfon Valley that make the climb entirely worthwhile. The summit itself is unremarkable - moorland, a few stones, sheep - but the panorama from up there justifies the effort.

It's the kind of walk walkers actually want to do. Not too long, not too technical, and the ascent feels genuine without being punishing. Most people allow two to three hours return from the bottom, depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top taking photos. Spring and autumn are best - summer can be a bit boggy in places, and winter adds unnecessary complications.

Families with teenagers will manage it fine. Younger kids might find it a slog on the way up. There's no fee, no visitor centre, no facilities at the summit - this is proper countryside walking, not a packaged attraction.

If you're staying at Irfon River Caravan & Camping Park or Riverside Caravan & Camping Park, both just a mile or so away, Pennau makes an excellent morning or afternoon outing. It works well paired with exploring Llangammarch Wells itself, a quiet spa town worth a mooch around. The Irfon Valley's worth driving through regardless - rolling hills, proper sheep country, very Mid Wales. Bring decent boots and don't expect facilities.
