Mynydd Epynt

The walk up Mynydd Epynt rewards you with proper 360-degree views across Mid Wales - nothing fancy, just open moorland that lets you see for miles on a clear day. It's a straightforward ascent from Llangammarch Wells, taking most people around an hour to reach the summit at 1,664 feet. The terrain is accessible rather than technical, making it suitable for families with older kids and anyone reasonably fit.

What you're doing up here is essentially walking through working moorland - sheep graze on the slopes, and in spring the place comes alive with curlews and lapwings. There's a small cairn at the top, nothing to write home about, but the views toward the Brecon Beacons and across the Irfon Valley more than make up for it. On hazy days it's just okay; catch it clear and you'll understand why people bother.

It's free, obviously - it's a mountain. Bring decent boots because the ground gets boggy in places, particularly after rain. Allow two hours if you're taking it leisurely with photos. Winter can be bleak and exposed, so spring through autumn is your best bet.
