Bryn Dû

There's a proper climb waiting for you at Bryn Dû, a modest peak that rises above the moorland near Llangammarch Wells. Nothing extreme - more of a determined walk than a scramble - but the views back across the rolling Powys landscape make it worthwhile, especially on clear days when you can pick out the distant ridges.

The summit itself is unremarkable in the way many Mid Wales peaks are: boggy at the top, sparse grass, a few stones. What matters is the walk up and the perspective it gives you over the surrounding valleys. On a grey day it's a bit bleak; on sunshine it transforms. This is proper moorland country, so bring good boots and expect wet undergrowth even when the sky's been clear.

You'll want a couple of hours here if you're not rushing. It's the sort of place that appeals to walkers who know the Powys hills already rather than casual visitors - no café, no facilities, just you and the weather. Families with younger legs might find it frustrating unless they're used to moorland walking.

The nearby Irfon River itself is worth exploring if you want something less strenuous. Go early in the day to avoid the afternoon mist that can roll in quickly up here.
