Caernarfon

The fortress walls rise straight from the waterfront, their honey-coloured stone catching the morning light off the Menai Strait. This is Edward I's masterpiece, and walking beneath those towering curtain walls still feels properly intimidating seven centuries later.

Caernarfon Castle dominates everything here - as it was meant to. The town spreads out from its shadow, a mix of medieval streets and Georgian terraces that's refreshingly real compared to some of Wales's more touristy spots. The high street has its share of charity shops and cafes, but there's genuine life here beyond the summer crowds.

Saint Michael's Church sits quietly away from the castle's drama, worth a look if you fancy something less overwhelming. But honestly, the castle's where you'll spend most of your time. Those octagonal towers are unique in Britain, and the views from Eagle Tower across Snowdonia are cracking.

Getting here's straightforward enough. The A487 brings you in from most directions, and there's a proper train station if you're coming from further afield. Bangor's only eight miles northeast if you need bigger shops or services.

Staying at one of the holiday parks dotted around the area makes perfect sense. Glan Gwna Holiday Park and Plas Coch offer different vibes, while smaller spots like Riverside Camping or Rhyd Y Galen give you that proper Welsh countryside feel. You're ideally placed for both the castle and day trips into Snowdonia - Snowdon itself is barely half an hour's drive. The Menai Strait's right there too, perfect for coastal walks when you've had your fill of medieval history.
