This ancient cathedral city sits between Snowdonia's towering peaks and the Menai Strait's glittering waters, making it one of North Wales' best-kept secrets for outdoor enthusiasts.

Foel Goch and Y Garn rise dramatically to the south, offering proper mountain walking without the Snowdon crowds. The peaks here are serious business - Elidir Fawr and Pen Yr Ole Wen demand respect and decent boots. But the rewards are cracking views across to Anglesey and the Irish Sea beyond.

Down in the city itself, the cathedral feels almost intimate compared to its grander Welsh cousins. Zip World Penrhyn Quarry provides an adrenaline rush for those who prefer their thrills engineered rather than earned through sweat. Y Ddraig Derw gallery showcases local artists, though it's hardly essential viewing.

Archaeology buffs will appreciate the Hut Circle and Rhiw-goch Hillfort scattered across the surrounding hills. These ancient sites feel properly remote, despite being a short drive from town. The War Memorial offers a moment's reflection and decent views without the leg work.
