Talsarnau

Ancient stone circles dot the hills here like forgotten sentinels. This small Snowdonia settlement sits between the mountains and the sea, where the Ffestiniog Railway chugs through landscapes that feel utterly timeless.

Talsarnau itself is a proper Welsh village - no frills, just a station on the heritage line and a scattering of houses. But it's the surrounding countryside that makes this corner of Gwynedd special. Archaeological sites pepper the hills: stone circles, cairns, and ancient settlements that predate most of European civilisation. The Hut Circle and Ancient Settlement remains speak of communities who worked this land millennia ago.

Plas Brondanw Tower offers cracking views across the Vale of Ffestiniog. From here you can see why the Victorians fell for this landscape so completely. The peaks of Hir Ynys, Clogwyn Pwrsiog, and Moel Goedog rise from valleys still green with ancient oak woods.

Getting here means taking the A487 through Porthmadog, though the Ffestiniog Railway from Minffordd station is far more atmospheric. The little train winds up from sea level through some of the finest mountain scenery in Wales, stopping at Talsarnau itself before continuing to Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Staying at one of the holiday parks nearby puts you right in walking distance of those prehistoric sites. It's also perfectly placed for day trips: Portmeirion is twenty minutes south, Snowdon an hour north, and the beaches of Cardigan Bay just down the valley. Most visitors rush through on their way somewhere else. Their loss.
