The steam from Cambrian Coast line trains still drifts across this traditional Welsh seaside town, where Victorian terraces tumble down towards a crescent of sandy beach. Pwllheli sits at the southern end of the Llŷn Peninsula like a well-weathered gateway to some of Wales's most unspoilt countryside.

Main Beach stretches for miles in both directions, backed by dunes and the occasional ice cream van. It's proper family territory - safe swimming, decent waves for beginners, and enough space that it never feels crowded even in August. The town itself keeps things simple: a high street with proper Welsh butchers and bakers, plus the usual seaside suspects.

Beyond the promenade, the Llŷn Peninsula unfolds in all its rugged glory. Ancient peaks like Garn Fadryn and Mynytho Common rise from patchwork fields, while tiny churches such as Eglwys St Iestyn dot the landscape between dry stone walls. The walking here is exceptional - ridge routes with views across Cardigan Bay to Ireland on clear days.

Getting here takes commitment. The train from Machynlleth winds through stunning valleys but adds hours to any journey from England. Driving via the A487 is quicker, though the final stretch through Criccieth can crawl in summer.

Staying at one of the holiday parks scattered around Pwllheli makes perfect sense for exploring this forgotten corner of Wales. You're within striking distance of the coast path, the mountain walks, and those wonderfully remote Llŷn Peninsula beaches that most tourists never find.
