Bwlch-Glas

Standing at 2,095 feet above Snowdonia's slate-scarred valleys, Bwlch-Glas rewards proper hill walkers with sweeping views across Cardigan Bay and the Rhinog mountains. This is no tourist peak with a gift shop at the summit - you'll earn every yard of elevation on steep, rocky paths that demand decent boots and a head for heights.

Reached from the village of Talsarnau, the ascent follows old quarry tracks before striking uphill through bracken and heather. The final push involves a bit of scrambling, though nothing too technical for anyone comfortable on rough ground. Allow three hours for the round trip if you're reasonably fit.

Families with young children should probably give this one a miss - the terrain gets properly challenging near the top, and there's no gentle alternative route. Keen walkers and photographers, however, will find it well worth the effort. The panoramic views on a clear day stretch from the Lleyn Peninsula to Snowdon's bulk, with the coast road snaking below like a dropped ribbon.
