About Pant-Y-Wrach
From the summit, you'll see right across Cardigan Bay on clear days, with the Lleyn Peninsula stretching north and the hills of mid-Wales rolling south. The real treat is looking down into the wooded Dwyryd valley - it's particularly lovely in autumn when the trees are turning.
Walkers will appreciate this as a proper hill without the crowds that mob Snowdon or Cadair Idris. It's free, obviously, and you can park in Talsarnau village then follow the public footpath signs. Early morning gives you the best light for photography and fewer sheep getting in your shots.
Kids might find the views a bit tame compared to bigger peaks, but the walk itself keeps them interested with plenty of rocks to scramble over. Allow two to three hours for the round trip, including time to eat your sandwiches at the top.
If you're staying at Haven Greenacres or any of the other holiday parks around Porthmadog, this makes a decent half-day excursion when the weather's playing ball.
