Elidir Fawr

Elidir Fawr sits in that brilliant zone where you get genuine mountain experience without needing technical climbing gear or a dawn start. The summit itself - 923 metres up - commands proper views across Snowdonia toward the coast, and on a clear day you'll spot Anglesey and the Menai Strait spreading out below.

The walk up from Llanberis (about 2.5 miles from the nearest caravan parks) takes somewhere between two and three hours depending on your pace and which route you fancy. Most people tackle it via the Llanberis Path, which is relentless but straightforward - no scrambling, just steady grind. The reward is the quarry ruins you pass en route, ghostly remnants of the old slate workings that once made this valley hum with industry. It's a reminder that these hills weren't just scenery to the people who lived here.

This is walker territory, no question. Families with confident teenagers will manage it fine; younger kids might find the length a slog. The peak itself isn't particularly dramatic - no sharp ridge or exposed scramble - but that's rather the point. You get the elevation gain and the views without the faffing about.

Stay at one of the touring parks clustered around Llanberis - Llanberis Touring Park sits just down the road - and you've got a solid base for exploring the wider Snowdonia slate belt. Pair it with a wander round Llanberis itself, grab a brew, job done. Free to walk, obviously. Go midweek if you can; weekends pull the crowds.
