Rhiw-goch Hillfort

Iron Age ramparts rise unexpectedly from moorland just outside Bangor, their earthen walls still commanding the high ground after two thousand years. Rhiw-goch Hillfort isn't a manicured visitor attraction with interpretation boards and a café - it's a proper archaeological site where you're reading the landscape itself, tracing where ancient people chose to build and defend their settlement.

The walk up takes twenty minutes or so from the nearest road access, and the views across Anglesey and toward the Snowdonian peaks make it more than worthwhile. You can see the concentric rings of fortification once you're up there, though you'll need to use your imagination a bit to picture the timber structures and occupants from the centuries before Roman invasion.

This is for walkers and archaeology enthusiasts rather than casual day-trippers. Kids who enjoy scrambling through rough terrain will get something out of it, but there's no playground or storytelling infrastructure - just earthworks and space. The site is free and open access, though you'll want sturdy boots and to check weather before heading up, as the exposed hillside gets boggy.

Staying at Ogwen Bank, Tros Y Waen, or any of the caravan parks within a few miles puts you perfectly for combining this with walks around Snowdon itself. Use it as a half-day adventure between longer park-based explorations rather than a destination in itself.
