The old RAF base looms over this working village where military heritage meets everyday Welsh life. Llanbedr isn't trying to be pretty - it's got proper character instead, built around practical needs rather than tourist expectations. The village sits in the Meirionnydd countryside with the Snowdonia peaks forming a dramatic backdrop to the east.

Traeth Llandanwg Beach stretches south of the village, a proper wild stretch of sand where you can walk for miles without seeing a gift shop. The beach backs onto dunes that lead to St Tanwg's church at Llandanwg - one of Wales' most atmospheric ruins, half-buried in sand and utterly compelling. Local legend claims it's the smallest church in Britain, though that's debatable.

Shell Island, despite the name, isn't actually an island but a peninsula accessible at low tide - a bit of a trek but well worth it for the solitude. The coastline here holds secrets: there's a documented Shipwreck site that draws maritime archaeology enthusiasts, while Mochras Lagoon offers calmer waters for those who prefer their coast without Atlantic swells.

Getting here means the A496 coastal road from Barmouth or Harlech - both about 15 minutes away. The railway still stops at Llanbedr station, part of the Cambrian Coast line that's one of Britain's most scenic rail journeys. Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense for exploring this stretch of coast. You're close enough to Harlech Castle for day trips, but far enough from the crowds to enjoy some peace. Min-y-don Holiday Park and Castle View Caravan Park offer good bases for exploring both the coast and the mountains beyond.
