Traeth Llandanwg Beach

The beach at Llandanwg sits where the Afon Artro meets the sea, backed by a strip of dunes that's surprisingly wild for somewhere so accessible from Llanbedr. It's a proper working beach - you'll see fishing boats and the occasional surfer, not just families with windbreaks. The sand is firm and gently shelving, which makes it decent for swimming when the tide's in, though the bay can get a bit choppy depending on the swell.

What makes it different from the other stretches along this coast is the sense of actual place. There's a small village feel to it rather than that anonymous tourist-beach atmosphere. The dunes behind hold a ruined 12th-century church - St Tanwg's - which sits half-buried in the sand. It's an odd, slightly haunting spot that adds genuine character. You're not just walking along a beach; you're walking past bits of real history getting slowly reclaimed by nature.

It works well as part of a wider holiday if you're staying at Black Rock Sands Touring and Camping Park nearby. You could easily spend a couple of hours here without feeling rushed, though don't expect facilities - there's nothing on the beach itself. The best time is probably early morning before the light walkers arrive, or late afternoon when the sun's lower and the light proper shines across the sand. Families with young kids will manage fine; the shallow approach means they can paddle safely enough. Walkers will appreciate it as a proper section of the Cardigan Bay coastline, not a theme park beach.
