This corner of Sheffield feels miles from the steel works - because it essentially is. The Pennine hills roll away in all directions, dotted with stone walls and the occasional farmhouse.

Winscar Reservoir makes for a decent walk, though it's the surrounding peaks that really catch the eye. Cheese Gate Nab and South Nab offer cracking views across the valley, while Horse Stone Naze provides a good scramble for anyone wanting to stretch their legs properly. The Round House, a curious stone structure, sits as a reminder of the area's industrial past when water power drove the mills below.

Pike Lowe Studio & Gallery brings a splash of culture to this rural outpost. Worth a look if the weather turns, though honestly the moors are at their best when the clouds are building. Upper and Lower Windleden Reservoirs complete the watery quartet, each offering different walking routes through the Kings Tree nature reserve.

Getting here means heading out of Sheffield city centre - about 20 minutes by car up into the hills. The nearest train station is back in Stocksbridge, so you'll need wheels. It's proper moorland country once you arrive, with lanes that twist between dry stone walls and the odd sheep.

Staying at one of the local camping spots makes perfect sense. You're bang on the doorstep of the Dark Peak, with Holmfirth just down the valley and the best of the Yorkshire moors within striking distance.
