Horse Stone Naze

The walk up to Horse Stone Naze rewards you with something you won't get from Sheffield's city centre - proper views across the Peak District ridges that stretch for miles. It's a modest peak, mind you, nothing that'll leave you breathless on the ascent, but the stone itself is worth the detour if you're already in the area.

What you're actually looking at is a gritstone outcrop with a well-trodden path leading up. The views are the main event here - on a clear day you can see across to Stanage and beyond. Walkers will get the most from it, particularly if you're doing a longer route through the surrounding moorland. If you're camping at one of the nearby spots like Thurlmoor Farm or Hoodlands Farm, it's genuinely worth adding to your itinerary rather than sitting in the caravan all afternoon.

Allow an hour or so for the walk and a bit of poking about the summit. There's no visitor centre or cafe, so bring water and something to eat if you're making an afternoon of it. The whole thing is free - no gates, no charges, just moorland and footpaths. Timing matters though. Weekends get busier than you'd expect, and the mist can roll in quickly even when the valley looks clear. Spring and autumn are your best bets for consistent weather.

It's not a grand day out on its own, but bundled with other walks in the area or as part of a camping holiday in South Yorkshire, it's absolutely worth the effort. The Peak District gets the headlines, but this bit of high ground delivers without the crowds.
