Upper Windleden Reservoir

Upper Windleden Reservoir sits in the rolling moorland south of Sheffield, a proper slice of Peak District water that catches most visitors off guard. It's a working reservoir - so don't expect swimming or paddling - but the walk around it is genuinely lovely, with views across the valley and enough space that you won't feel hemmed in by other people.

The main draw here is the footpath that loops the water's edge. Allow a good hour if you're taking it easy, maybe 45 minutes if you're striding out. It's not strenuous, though there are a few damp patches after rain. Walkers and photographers do well out of it - the light gets interesting in late afternoon, and you'll spot herons if you're patient. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after a while; there's not much to do except walk and look.

Access appears to be free, though facilities are minimal - take water and a packed lunch if you're making a day of it. The nearest decent parking is a bit of a hunt, so arrive early if the weather's good.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Thurlmoor Farm is closest at just over a mile away - it's worth a morning or evening walk without needing to go far. Pair it with a proper hike across Stanage Edge or a visit to Grindleford if you want something more challenging. On its own, Upper Windleden works as a gentle half-day outing, not a destination in itself.
