Round House

Standing on the edge of Sheffield, this curious circular building catches your eye immediately - it's not every day you stumble across a perfectly round structure from centuries past. The Round House served as a toll house back when roads meant serious money, and its unique shape was designed so toll collectors could keep watch in every direction.

History buffs will find plenty to ponder here, though don't expect lengthy explanations or fancy visitor facilities. This is very much a 'see it and appreciate it' sort of place rather than an all-day attraction. The building's solid stone construction has weathered the Yorkshire elements remarkably well, and you can still make out the original windows that once framed vigilant toll keepers.

Families staying at nearby sites like Thurlmoor Farm or Beesknees Glamping might fancy a quick detour, but realistically you're looking at twenty minutes maximum unless you're particularly keen on 18th-century architecture. The kids might be more impressed by its unusual shape than its historical significance.

Location-wise, it's proper convenient if you're exploring the Sheffield area anyway. Makes for a nice leg-stretcher between the city and the surrounding countryside, and the short walk from any of the local campsites won't tire anyone out. Worth a look if you're passing, though I wouldn't make a special journey just for this one.
