Cheese Gate Nab

Standing 393 metres above the Pennine valleys, this modest Yorkshire peak delivers proper views without the crowds that swarm Kinder Scout or Bleaklow. The name might sound daft, but Cheese Gate Nab earns its place on any serious walker's list - the panorama from the summit takes in Sheffield's sprawling suburbs to the east and wild moorland stretching west towards Manchester.

Getting there requires a decent trek across rough terrain from the nearest road. Most walkers approach from the Hope Valley or via Longdendale, and you'll want proper boots and waterproofs regardless of the forecast. The path isn't waymarked, so decent navigation skills help unless you fancy an unplanned detour across the peat bogs.

Families with young children might find the going too tough, but teenagers who can handle a proper walk will love the sense of achievement. This isn't a Sunday afternoon stroll - allow at least four hours for the round trip from any sensible starting point.

The peak works brilliantly as part of a Peak District camping holiday. Several sites like Secret Valley Escapes and Holme Valley Camping sit within easy striking distance, making this a cracking day out for anyone staying locally. Just don't expect facilities up there - bring everything you need.
