Stair Wood

The path into Stair Wood climbs steeply from the outskirts of Keswick, and within minutes you've left the town noise behind entirely. It's a proper Lake District woodland - dense conifers mixed with deciduous trees, the kind of place where the light filters through in shafts and the air feels noticeably cooler than it did five minutes ago.

This isn't a manicured forest experience. You're walking through genuine working woodland, and the trails can be muddy and root-strewn, especially after rain. The ascent is relentless but manageable for most walkers, and the payoff comes in the form of views back toward Keswick and the surrounding fells - nothing extraordinary, but a solid reward for the graft.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a casual stroll - budget a good couple of hours including time to catch your breath at the top. Families with young kids might find the steep sections frustrating; teenagers and adults after a proper leg-stretch will enjoy it. History buffs won't find much here, but that's rather the point. It's about the walk itself.

Being so close to Keswick makes it dead easy to slot into a caravan park holiday in the area. Castlerigg Hall Caravan, Camping and Glamping Park sits just under three miles away, or if you're at Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club, you could make this a half-day effort. There's no visitor centre, no café - just a wood that's been here longer than most of us and probably will be long after.
