Castlehead

The walk up Castlehead from Keswick takes about twenty minutes if you're moving at a decent pace, and it's one of those climbs that punches well above its weight. You start near the lakeside and head steeply uphill through woodland - nothing technical, but your calves will know about it - before breaking out onto open fell with proper views across Derwent Water and the Borrowdale peaks beyond. It's not a long outing, which is precisely why families gravitate here. Kids can manage it without complaint, and there's genuine reward at the top: a cairn, a bench, and visibility that stretches for miles on a clear day. The whole thing, summit included, is easily done in an hour, making it ideal if you're based at Castlerigg Hall or Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club and want a proper walk without eating the whole afternoon. Walkers heading into the bigger fells often skip it entirely, which seems daft. The fell itself is free to access - no gates, no fees - and it's genuinely less crowded than Catbells, which sits just across the water. On a wet day it gets boggy and the views vanish into cloud, so timing matters. Clear weather is non-negotiable here. If you're staying anywhere around Keswick for a week, this is a cracking way to stretch your legs on your first or last day without committing to anything ambitious. Threlkeld Hall, further out, makes a sensible base too if you want quieter camping.
